Overview

There is no wildlife encounter quite like sitting two metres from a wild mountain gorilla family -- watching them eat, play, and groom, completely unbothered by your presence. Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park protects more than half the world's remaining mountain gorillas, and this eight-day journey combines the trekking experience with chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest, a powerful visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, and a tranquil finale on the shores of Lake Kivu. A trip that stays with you.

Guaranteed gorilla trekking permit -- Volcanoes National Park
One hour face-to-face with a wild gorilla family
Chimpanzee tracking in ancient Nyungwe Forest
Kigali Genocide Memorial -- a profound and necessary visit
Lake Kivu lakeside lodge retreat
Golden monkey tracking in the Virunga bamboo
Mount Bisoke crater lake hike (optional)
Private 4WD vehicle and expert Rwandan naturalist throughout

Day 1

Arrival in Kigali -- City & Genocide Memorial

Land in Kigali -- Africa's cleanest, safest capital. Private transfer to your hotel. Afternoon visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a moving and essential piece of Rwanda's history. Welcome dinner.

Day 2

Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Drive north through Rwanda's famous thousand hills to the base of the Virunga Volcanoes. Check in to your luxury lodge on the edge of the park. Afternoon orientation briefing.

Day 3

Mountain Gorilla Trek -- Day One

Rise early and drive to the park headquarters for briefing. Your ORTPN-certified guide leads you through bamboo forest and volcanic slopes until you locate your assigned gorilla family. One unforgettable hour in their presence.

Day 4

Second Gorilla Permit or Golden Monkey Tracking

Use your second included permit for another gorilla family encounter -- different dynamics, different personalities -- or opt for golden monkey tracking, a playful, photogenic alternative in the Virunga bamboo forest.

Day 5

Mount Bisoke Hike -- Crater Lake Summit (Optional)

Trek to the summit of Mount Bisoke (3,711m) and its stunning crater lake. On clear days, views extend over Uganda, the DRC, and Rwanda's green hills. Return to lodge for a recovery dinner.

Day 6

Transfer to Nyungwe Forest

Drive south through Rwanda's tea-covered hills and past Lake Kivu to Nyungwe National Park -- one of Africa's oldest and most biodiverse montane rainforests.

Day 7

Chimpanzee Tracking & Canopy Walk

Dawn chimpanzee tracking through the deep forest -- Rwanda's chimps are well-habituated. Afternoon on the spectacular Nyungwe canopy walkway, suspended 60 metres above the forest floor.

Day 8

Lake Kivu -- Farewell & Departure

Transfer to the serene shores of Lake Kivu for a relaxing final night, or connect directly to Kigali International Airport for your departure flight. A journey you will describe to others for the rest of your life.
